Boynton Beach Police Remind Drivers To Watch Speed In School Zones

The Boynton Beach Police Department is out enforcing the 20 miles per hour speed limit in school zones, after 815 citations and 581 warnings were given out to drivers last year.

Public Information Officer Stephanie Slater tells us the goal is not to have to ticket you.

"Ideally we'd like to write zero because that means that everyone is driving the speed limit. It means that we're doing our jobs in educating the community and it means that our children are safe."

During an enforcement event in front of Citrus Cove Elementary on Thursday morning, Slater says officers wrote seven tickets and three warnings.

She also says speeding is not the only thing police are watching for.

"Florida has this hands-free law. Officers can write you a ticket if you are physically holding your phone while driving in a school zone and also in a construction zone as well."

Slater says that the fact the media was on hand may have played a role in the low number of speeders on Thursday.
