The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced its choice for Lake Okeechobee's new management plan.
The plan, titled "Alternative CC," will drastically reduce discharges into the St. Lucie estuary.
Congressman Brian Mast says it's a start.
"Any one acrefoot or gallon or drop of water that comes out of Lake Okeechobee into our coastal estuary here, it's bad for it. It's negative. It puts us in the negative column."
The move means more water will flow south to the Everglades for at least the next ten years.
"CC" was the plan Mast was pulling for and he hopes the move limits the likelihood of toxic algae getting into Florida waterways.
