"Mr. Jonchuck is guilty, but insane."
That's the crux of John Jonchuck's defense.
He's charged with murdering his five-year-old daughter Phoebe by dropping her 70-feet from the top of the Dick Meisner Bridge on the approach to the Sunshine Skyway in January of 2015. But prosecutor Paul Bolan tells jurors during opening statements that, in spite of Jonchuck's life of mental health problems, he knew exactly what he was doing that night.
"He was sane when he committed that murder. He is the one who did it, and we are asking you to hold him responsible for it."
Jonchuck faces a life sentence if convicted. His trial is expected to take up to a month.
