At least five people were killed when a 21-year-old man entered the SunTrust bank on U.S. 27 in Sebring and opened fire.
Sebring Police Chief Kurt Hoglund says the man, later indentified as Zephen Xaver, called 9-1-1 shortly after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and told the dispatcher he had fired shots inside the bank.
Officers and Highlands County SWAT team members surrounded the bank and negotiated with Xaver, who did not surrender at that time. So, the police department says SWAT team members forced their way into the bank and continued to negotiate with Xaver, who eventually surrendered.
It's unclear how many people were in the bank at the time or if there are any injuries. Nor do we know why Xaver opened fire or even where he's from.
There will be another news briefing Thursday at 11 a.m.
Governor Ron Desantis, who attended this news conference, promised all the resources needed by law enforcement and the Sebring community.
