Red Light Camera Future In Hands Of FL High Court

TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - The Florida Supreme Court will decide whether red light camera enforcement is legal in the Sunshine State.

The High Court accepted a case that will resolve several conflicting lower court rulings.

In the case of Oldsmar, an appeals court ruled in favor of the city's right to use red light cameras to issue tickets for traffic violations.

But in Hollywood in South Florida, a different appeals panel ruled that red light cameras violated state law, because the city was handing over law enforcement duties to a third party.

Most red light cameras are operated by contractors that are, in most cases, out of state.
